How camo challenges work

Last verified 2026-11-03 · Sources: Call of Duty progression blog and patch notes, checked 2026-10-26

By Shangyi Duan · Reviewed against Activision / Call of Duty patch notes

Every weapon runs the same six-step ladder. The part that changes per weapon is the numbers — and how much of the row a publisher has actually confirmed.

Short answer Order: 8 Military level gates, 3 Special challenges, Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break, then Divergence after Harmonic Break on all 33 weapons.

MW4 camo ladder: 8 Military, 3 Special, Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break and Divergence

The ladder, as the data models it

Each of the 33 launch weapons has 14 rows in this site’s data: eight Military, three Special, Gold, Platinum and Harmonic Break. Divergence sits outside that 14 and is counted once for the account.

TierRows per weaponWhat opens itScope
Military8Weapon level. The eight levels differ per weapon and the last one can sit at the level cap.Per weapon
Special3A weapon level plus a challenge; the table shows the Multiplayer count and adds a DMZ count only where a source publishes one.Per weapon
Gold115 kills in a single match (Multiplayer), or 100 kills in a single match (DMZ).Per weapon
Platinum1Gold on every weapon in the class, then that class’s Platinum challenge.Per class
Harmonic Break1Platinum on all 33 weapons, then each class’s Harmonic Break challenge. All weapons
Divergence—Unlock Harmonic Break on all 33 weapons. No separate challenge is published.Account

So the order is fixed: Military → Special → Gold → Platinum → Harmonic Break → Divergence. Divergence is the only entry in the table that is not one of the 14.

What the labels mean

Every challenge row on this site carries one of three labels, taken from the data fields rather than written by hand. They answer a single question: has a publisher stated this, or not?

LabelMeaningWhere it appears
officialPublished by Activision or Call of Duty and checked against the source on a recorded date. The tooltip carries both the source and the check date. The camo ladder, Gold, Divergence, Multiplayer and DMZ mastery, Weapon Prestige camos, both Assault Rifle class counts, and the Military and Special rows for the Han 86 and Sang 9mm.
unverifiedA community report this site could not confirm. It is shown because the alternative is an empty row, but it is not the publisher’s word.Special rows for 31 weapons, the Military levels the sheet reports (M4, Hyeon Burst, launchers and knife), and class counts outside Assault Rifles.
not published officiallyNo source at all — unannounced in the data. The cell says so instead of guessing, and it stays that way until the game or a publisher states the value.Mosin-Nagant Special 2 and 3, DMZ class counts outside Assault Rifles, and any Military level a community sheet does not cover.

Why the Special rows for 31 weapons are unverified

Activision published full per-weapon Special camo rows for two weapons only. For the other 31, the levels and Multiplayer counts come from a pre-launch community sheet, which cannot have seen launch-day corrections — and the launch patch notes say several camo unlock requirements were inaccurate and were fixed. That is the whole reason the labels exist: a number from a pre-launch sheet is useful, but it is not the same kind of number as one from the publisher’s own post.

How to use a label before you grind

  1. Open the weapon page and read the label on the row you are about to chase. Official means a dated publisher statement; unverified means the number is not confirmed; not published means there is no number to plan around.
  2. Ignore any level that sits above the weapon’s max level. Four community rows do that today; the published max level stands and the conflict is listed on corrections.
  3. Before a long session, check the in-game challenge text against the row. The game is the authority, and the row is fixed when the wording is reported.
  4. Use the levels and kills calculator for the gap, and the tracker for what you have already ticked.

Start with the confirmed rows

Official rows come from Call of Duty publications and carry a checked date. Community rows are labelled and can change after a patch.

What else do players ask about MW4 camos?

What is the MW4 camo order?

Per the official Call of Duty blog: 8 Military camos (weapon level), 3 Special camos, Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break, then the Divergence mastery camo.

How do I unlock Gold camo in MW4?

Get 15 kills in a single Multiplayer match, or 100 kills in a single DMZ match, with that weapon.

How do I unlock Platinum?

Earn Gold on every weapon in the class, then finish the class challenge. Assault Rifles: 50 headshots in Multiplayer or 100 in DMZ.

How do Harmonic Break and Divergence unlock?

Harmonic Break needs Platinum on all 33 weapons plus a class challenge (Assault Rifles: 25 double kills in MP or 50 in DMZ). Divergence needs Harmonic Break on all 33 weapons.

Why are some challenges marked unverified?

Activision has published full Special camo challenges only for the Han 86 and Sang 9mm. For the other 31 weapons we show community-reported challenges from a pre-launch sheet, clearly flagged, because the launch patch says some in-game requirements were corrected.

Where is my progress stored?
